Our vehicle is full! Table for 5, please! Parents are officially out-numbered! We welcomed Roman Kyle Carr into our family on December 29th, 2009 at 7:56am. He weighed in at 7'01" and was 19 inches long. He has the honor of sharing a birthday with his Meme! So special!
Originally, we had a scheduled C-Section planned for December 31st. We thought since he had a birthday so close to Christmas, it would be cool to have it on New Year's Eve! (And, of course, taxes played a part, too! Ha!) But, we found out that our insurance through Dave's work was going to change after the first of the year and if we were still in the hospital after the first of the year, we would have to pay 2010's deductible as well! AND-our deductible is doubling across the board! UGH! So, I had a doctor's appointment on the 28th and I told him about our situation. He agreed to move the surgery to the 29th and we were off and running!
I had several things I needed to get done before the baby came and I have to admit, as ready as I was, when the doctor agreed to move us up, I got pretty nervous!! AND I felt like I had sooo much to do! First thing to do was to call my friend Tara and make sure she could still help us. She had agreed to stay the night with us and take care of Kaedyn the morning of the C-Section. She was more then willing and I am so greatful to her! She is such a great friend! Mom came over and helped me get things in order and I took down Christmas. (Or most of it, anyway!) She took Ethan with her so that he could go the hospital with her in the morning.
As I put Kaedyn in bed, I thought it would be a good idea to let her know what was happening. I told her that when she woke up, Tara would be there to take her to Connie's and Daddy and I would be at the hospital so that Roman could be born. This was NOT a good idea! She started crying and told me I just couldn't leave! "Don't go, Mommy!" This BROKE my heart! I am not sure if she thought I wouldn't be back, or what! But it certainly upset her. It took awhile to calm her down.
I packed my bag and the baby's bag and tried to settle down to go to sleep. Dave didn't seem to have any trouble with that! Ha! Kaedyn came into my room at about 2am and would NOT go back to sleep. She was still upset and she said she wanted to watch TV on the couch. I let her.
I "woke up" (didn't sleep much!) at about 4:30 (we had to be at the hospital at 5:30 for a 7:30 surgery) and Kaedyn was STILL awake! I got ready and finally dragged David out of bed. Kaedyn was still not happy and was very clingy. It was very hard to leave her, but after a final "pregnant picture", we left and headed to the hospital. (With a detour through McDonald's for Dave!) Tara said Kaedyn did fine after we left but never went back to sleep! (Sorry, Tara! It must have been a a long day for you!)
After we arrived at the hosptial, I was hooked up to the moniters and an IV was put in place and everything was becoming VERY real!! I was having some pretty consistant contractions. I was feeling them and they were getting pretty strong so I finally asked the nurse and she looked at the moniter and said they were pretty consistant at about 4-7 minutes apart! I think Mr. Roman would have come on his own that day or the next!
It was finally "go time" and I walked down to the surgery room with the nurses. Dave had to get his scrubs on and I got my spinal block. Unfortunately, I got sick, but lucky for Dave,he missed that part!
It is a very strange feeling to be operated on while awake. I could feel the pressure but no pain. When I had Kaedyn, I did get sick once but then felt fine after that. Unfortunately with this one, I really didn't feel good the whole time. But, I was more than excited to see my little guy for the first time! Dr. Kincheloe held him up and he was perfect, of course! Dave brought him over to me after they got his initial "stats" and I just wanted to get my hands on him! I noticed he was really "gurgling" and coughing and it made me a little nervous. Dave then took him to the nursery with the nurses. The doctor finished with me and I was rolled into recovery.
I was still not feeling well so I think they kept me in recovery for quite awhile. Dave came in several times and kept me informed. Roman was having trouble breathing and they were having to give him treatments. It might have been a good thing that I was a bit out of it because I think I would have freaked out a little more! Especially when he told me if he didn't respond after a couple of the treatments they would take him to the NICU! They finally stabalized his breathing and brought him to me. He was ready to eat and started nursing like a champ!
I continued to feel bad the rest of the day, which was a bummer! The nausea really didn't go away until late that night. Mom and Ethan kept me company and held Roman while Dave went home to take a nap and recover from the morning. Ethan was amazing! He hung out ALL day and loved holding Roman and taking care of him. He is such a great Big Brother.
David brought Kaedyn back with him. He said he told her she was going to meet her little brother and she was NOT excited about it! When they got to my room, he picked her up to look at Roman in the bassinet. She looked at him and I WISH I had a video of what she said. She looked down at him and said, "He's...he's BEAUTIFUL!" It was like she really didn't WANT to like him but after laying eyes on him, she didn't have a choice! It was so precious. Mom took the kids with her to spend the night.
We were able to come home on the 31st. Mom said she could keep the kids again if we needed and I must admit I was a little nervous about everyone coming home that night, but decided we might as well jump right in with both feet! It all worked out and our biggest issue is the fact that the kids fight over who gets to hold him next!! We, of course, have to really watch Kaedyn around him because she tends to be
a bull in a china closet!
Both kids are doing great adjusting to life with another sibling and Roman could not be more precious. He really is a beautiful baby and he has been a very good baby thus far! He is dealing with some congestion and a cold right now (at only two weeks old!) and gets a little uncomfortable but other then that, he is so great!
Dave and I feel so blessed to have three beautiful and healthy children. Roman really does complete our family and, after only two weeks, I can't imagine life without him!
